Studio 51.15

A visual language for music.

Studio 51.15 is a moniker of Maciej Hermanowski, one of the best musically informed people I ever knew. Studio’s mission is to promote independent music, which is usually left off the radar for mainstream radio stations and TV.

The idea behind this dynamic identity was to develop a playful visual language, which could be easily remixed and applied to variety of situations: social media banners, posters, events, clothes, record labels etc.

As a base for my graphic ABC I have looked into “Treatise” an experimental music notation score, devised by Cornelius Cardew between 1963-67 (have a listen to how it sounds here).

Inspiration for the logo came from the 'white label' records. Being a fan of classic designs I've picked almost instantly the typeface designed by Herb Lubalin in the 70s called Avant Garde (coincidentally, 70s has produced majority of my favorite music too).
A few subtle cuts were then applied to make it a bit more personal — I hope Herb wouldn't mind.

Impressively well 3d printed in stainles steel by Shapeways, these 45RPM adapters make a nice gift among friends and supporters.
